Hi, I’m Laura.
Hi, my name is Laura, and I am the Owner and Founder of Laura Solt Bookkeeping. I am a wife and mom to three sweet kiddos, and I consider myself to be a healthy foodie. Before becoming a mom, I had a decade of experience in the banking industry. My husband is also a business owner in the construction industry, for which I have done the bookkeeping for the past 7+ years.
During my time in banking, I had the opportunity to work with many business owners. Some were thriving and others were struggling to keep things afloat. Sometimes the business owners who were struggling would surprise you. These businesses, from the outside, appeared to be very successful. When visiting their establishments, it was hard to find a parking spot in the parking lot. They were busy, and every seat inside was always taken. Some of them owned construction companies. Their queue of projects was always full, and they were swamped with their workload.
Yet these business owners’ banking situation showed a different part to the story.
Their account balances were regularly negative, or they would come in to get a bigger loan or line of credit to ensure they could keep paying the bills. I watched these businesses remain busy until they eventually had to fold. It was hard to watch. And the sad part is, I could list examples like this for hours.
Then my husband began his business in March of 2008. I had a front-row seat to the challenges facing business owners because I lived it!
My husband, like most start-ups, wore all the hats and did all the things for his business. Eventually his resources were spread thin. He could only do so many things well, and the rest was placed on the back-burner. One of those things was his bookkeeping. He started to lose track of expenses and profit margins. Bills began to pile up on the credit card. He had a hard time knowing if he should bid projects differently because he didn’t know exactly how profitable each project was. I finally said “enough” and took over his bookkeeping. We paid off $18K in business-related credit card debt in one year once I took over his books. His profits for each project began to increase because he had up-to-date financials to make strategic decisions.
That is the power of good bookkeeping.
After living through these struggles first-hand with my husband’s business, I began to realize that the banking customers who struggled had one fundamental thing missing: Bookkeeping. And thus the inspiration for Laura Solt Bookkeeping began.
I firmly believe that every business needs good bookkeeping. Simply having a snapshot of your business once a year at tax time is not enough for you to make strategic business decisions throughout the year. You don’t know where you’re overspending. You don’t know what strategies are working or need to be changed. You don’t know if your services are appropriately priced. And you’re not doing it yourself because you lack the time, confidence or desire...or maybe all three.
If you are serious about growing your business, it is time to partner with a professional --- someone who can take over this piece for you to enable you to make the best possible decisions for your business.
